Day Two: Extreme heat takes a toll in Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Golf is a game of numbers, especially in the FedExCup Playoffs as players try to simultaneously calculate their standing not only in the tournament but also in the TOUR’s season-long points race.

There was one number that defined the second round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, and it was not one that the players could control. It was the heat index, which reached 111 degrees Friday.  Read more

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – There’s no need to tell anyone who ventured outside this summer that it’s hot, but Friday at the FedEx St. Jude Championship hit differently.

According to the PGA Tour’s meteorologist, the high temperature on Day 2 at TPC Southwind was 94 degrees with a heat index of 110 degrees, which is a record this season.

Players said the heat was so severe it impacted decision making and in the case of Eric Larson, Harris English’s caddie, the intense conditions forced him to seek medical attention.  Read more

Jordan Spieth tried all week to reassure his caddie they could handle the heat at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis.

Then, Friday happened.

"I'm like, 'Man, I was wrong. I'm humbled. It's just a different kind of heat," said Spieth, who will go into Saturday's third round in second place at 9 under, one shot behind leader Lucas Glover.  Read more
